I haven't been able to get useful information out of a WAIS client yet, but
you might try posting your question to comp.infosystems.wais.  Folks on
that group would at least know the software.

Subject: Winsock Through Firewall

I currently have access to telnet and ftp through proxy telnet
and proxy ftp.  We do not have telnet and ftp software on our
individual workstations but need to connect to another machine on
our Novell lan which has proxy ftp and telnet access to the
Internet.  My question is:  Is it possible to run winsock applications
through the proxy machine from my desktop?  What drivers need to be
loaded? etc...  Any information would be welcomed.

We use the lpd that came with the IBM TCP/IP base kit for OS\2.  It works fine
and doesn't work the system very hard (you can even play DOOM while you spool
print jobs).

Subject: Inet Tour Guide & WinMosaic


I've been running WinMosaic with the Trumpet Winsock with absolutely no
difficulty, but I had not registered Trumpet and I was able to pick up the
Internet Tour Guide for $17.50 at Tower Books.  I figured I would have a
legal winsock and some other clients as well.  (I've been running most
'net clients other than Mosaic on my academic Vax or private unix box account
with me just playing terminal since I have to pay extra for my SLIP
connection).

Well, I can't get WinMosaic to work with the Chameleon winsock.  Mosaic
comes up and immediately complains that it doesn't have winsock or socket
services or whatever the error message is.  However, I can use the
Chameleon ping and ftp that come with the package with no problem.
Similarly, I can drop the SLIP connection with the Chameleon winsock, exit
it and start the trumpet winsock and then Mosaic will run just fine.
Chameleon's ping and ftp work just fine too with Trumpet.

Any thoughts?

I have just converted my system with PC-NFS, and I have found that
wsarchie works with this configuration, but the wintalk program does not.
BTW, Mosaic works as well.

Any Unix boxes around?  In common access to both PC's and
Apples?  If yes, you can duplicate a two-step process we
setup for transparent print from PC to appletalk printer:

1)  Get CAP60 (Columbia AppleTalk Protocol; check archie)
    running and configured on the common unix
    box.  You should be able to print from unix using a
    command like:
    #unix>  lpr -PApple_Printer_Name file_name

2)  Next, grab WinLPR from CICA (ftp.cica.indiana.edu) in the
    winsock directory (or any other LPR spooler).  This one
    seems easy to use, transparent, and easy to maintain.
    (WARNING:  If the apple printer is PostScript, be sure to use the
    CTRL-D remover software that comes with it.  Seems windoze
    drivers want to send a CTRL-D at the beginning of a postscript.
    Brilliant!)

The unix side has to have a BSD (Berkely) spooler running, so
you can type "lpr" instead of "lp".

assign a host name to the ip address that is assigned to you when you run

Well, I'm just a user. I never heard anything about novasync, and I have
the Novell winsock running. It is indeed in my net/bin directory, which
is in my path, so I assume  that it is, if necessary, loaded by winsock.
So one could claim that there exist environments for which those people's
statement is correct :-)

But anyway, the Novell Winsock is unfortunately far from perfect.
While WinVN and Trumpet run flawless, Cello keeps crashing after
some time, as does Mosaic (though less frequent). Seems to me they still
have to iron some stuff out...

BTW - if you _only_ want to run Trumpet, try Trumpet's Lan Workplace
Version. Then you won't need winsock anyway.

But keep an eye on WinVN - it's getting better from release to release,
and starts to be a real alternative for Trumpet.

I'm not sure if there are any freebies around.  You can archie for
xwindemo.  You need Windows (obviously), winsock, FAST pc and that's
about it.  Works fairly well.  When we buy the commercial version, I can
tell you more!

I'm running WFW3.11 and Novell Lan Workplace with NFS and I have exactly
the same problem ! Access to the network drives hang the system in a DOS
box but Windows apllications access them without problems.

We have several PCs here with the same configuration but different network
boards and this problem only occurs on my box :-(

I have a NE2000-compatible board.

Hope to find the problem one day...

I have got it to work over Trumpet winsock.  Here is my Com file

Set the demo to rexec to the node with the command @comfile_name your_nodes_ip
filling in comfile_name and your_nodes_ip with the appropriate values.

Subject: My IP address thru WinSock w/o gethostname() & gethostbyname()

Hi,

  I want to get my ip address from WinSock. I know gethostname() to obtain
  my host name, but then I have to gethostbyname() to get the ip address!
  Is there a faster way out of this!

  Especially if I don't have Domain Name Resolver on my network & just want
  my ip address assigned manually !
